LOVE AND WAR

All the classic philosopherpoets say that all is fair in love and war. Well,technically, it was John Lyly who said that the rules of fair play don’t apply, but that’s close enough. Our interdepartmental book club came across the quote and we were instantly wondering where the inspiration for such a line may have come. It didn’t take long for us to look at ancient mythology and the delightful trickster who was born of Aphrodite and Ares, the gods of love and war.

Suddenly, it all made sense! The only thing that breaks the rules faster than love and war are our little tykes. It is only natural that the being who would manage to bring all those things together would be a little deity that can capture the hearts of all who look upon him. That adorable winged cupid has flown right out of ancient religion and into modern Valentine Day cards and everywhere else. We’d complain that it was hardly fair they were everywhere, but…
