Clara Barton is one of the most iconic nurses in history. It’s no wonder, she bravely marched into battlefields to take care of wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Not only did she save lives with her own hands, but she also empowered many women after her to follow in her footsteps. After the war in the US, she traveled the world and advocated for the protection of sick and wounded soldiers by all sides during wartime. And once she got back home, Clara Barton helped found the American Red Cross, where she served as president until she was 83 in 1904. Just imagine how strong a woman would have to be to hold such an important position in a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote!
Our in-house design team took care to add plenty of historic details into this Made By Us Clara Barton costume. They created a silhouette that would look right at home in the 1860s with billowing sleeves and a floor-length skirt with a built-in petticoat. At the same time, they’ve added handy modern shortcuts to make slipping back into time easier such as a zipper up the back and elastic around the wrists. To make you ready to serve as the Battlefield angel, the costume is complete with white cuffs that slip over the dress sleeves and a matching broadcloth apron with a proud red cross on the chest. A neat bonnet completes the look, making sure you’ll look right at home in a 19th-century medical tent!
